4 years after their first release, the all Italian band Act Noir release their second album, Shape a New Start.  Released in January 2010 under Milan’s Eibon Records, the new album features the new vocalist Gaetano Notarnicola.  Their music and vocals blending sounds like a mixture of Depeche Mode, A perfect Circle with a spice of Placebo.  Although their electro rock roots still remain strong, this time their musical direction is more melodic.

The overall album construction is like a spiral in which the electro music, rock and vocals fit very well together.  It all starts with the loud ‘Shatterproof Beauty’, featuring good heavy guitar riffs and drum works, accompanied with very catchy electro beats.  The way guitars and synths exposure changes, fit well the vocals style.  With a mixture of heavy electro beats in ‘Set Fire’, excellent drum loops and guitar melodies in ‘Wrong Places’ and a perfect balance of synths and guitars on ‘Redemption’ make this album a must listen to.

The closing track, ‘The Higher I Went, The Deeper I Feel’ is most probably the best track on the album.  After this electro rock journey, it is only appropriate to close with a slow, melodic and atmospheric track, which suites well the theme of the lyrics.  The lyrics explore the need to shape a new start, as the album title suggest.  Personal redemption of the past and the need to make changes and amendments is a need which cannot be ignored.  A journey back to the roots of humans and a look forward to start the much needed change!

and I cannot see the end
all my efforts all my hopes
to give this world another go are lost
down in the deepest blue
where everything is staying still
and no one wants to rise above and see the truth

The album is available from Eibon Records, where some samples from the album are also available.

In my teens I used to own a number of black metal albums from Cradle of Filth and some other black metal bands.  Although I do appreciate the talent needed to play such genre of music, I never managed to stick to such fast and noisy music while not understanding a word from the lyrics.

But I just listened to Heart of Ages, an album from the Norwegian band In the Woods… This was their first official album, released back in 1995.  Surely they left a good impression and this was their stepping stone to attract a huge number of worldwide fans.  Unlike today’s releases, Heart of Ages has that “not so perfect and polished” sound, which makes it sound more realistic.  Also, this album cannot be classified as black metal.  It’s an interesting and experimental blend of progressive Heathen metal, black metal and a hint of doom metal, and an influence of classical music as well.  The slow and athmospheric parts contain clean guitars, dark atmospheric keyboards, clean male and female vocals, which blends really well with the fast and high pitched guitar riffs and grunts.  Therefore this makes it impossible to label these seven symphonies as one genre type.

Good combination indeed!

While searching for something new and original, I’ve ended up chatting with Mark Schenkel, who pointed me to an innovative band called X:THC.  What is so special about this band, why are they innovative?  They are working on a new concept of music, an album and film experience at the same time.  Sounds weird, original or what?  But let’s just wait and see, I surely have high hopes for this project.  Since I’ve spoke to Mark, I’ve been checking my mailbox everyday, waiting for their new film / album to arrive, so I could check it out, listen to it.  What’s for sure is that they are also evolving and redefining their live shows within the model of the music industry, to create an unforgettable live experience for the fans to enjoy.

From the little glimpse I’ve had of this album, the band combines downtempo broken beats, soulful chill, and indie rock songwriting to create a lush, electronic soundscape.  The album X: The Human Condition, conjures also shades of post-punk and new wave, with a twisted and hypnotic sound.  Well let’s wait and see till we listen to the whole thing, but again, I’m confident in this project.  Well are you curious by now?  Wanna have a taste yourself?  Then sit down and relax, and enjoy the below video.  Stay tuned with this blog for a proper review of this great concept album, and interviews with members of this original band.

I haven’t written on the blog for quite some time due to the festive season, and organizing my CD collection.  While organizing and documenting my collection of CD’s and DVD’s, I’ve discovered that I have a number of duplicate CD’s (yeah when you buy a lot that’s how you end :P ).  The duplicate CD’s are not new, but they are in very good conditions, like new!  Instead of selling them, I decided to keep them and from time to time make a competition on this blog, and send the CD’s to the winners.  So for this Massive Attack competition, all you need to do is to answer the following question:

What are the nick names of the current members of the Massive Attack band?

Send me an email with the subject “Massive Attack Competition” and answer to the above question on bruce@muzikablog.com with your answer.  The competition will close on 31st January 2010.  The first draw with the correct answer will be awarded the CD.

I think that This Empty Flow is one of the most under-rated band ever, unfortunately.  A couple of years ago a friend of mine lent me one of their records, Nowafter.  Listening to them is like listening to a mixture of The Cure and Pink Floyd, with a mixture of great beats and soul touching vocals.  They are sad, slow, melancholic, Wintery (I like the word), ideal for this time of the year when it is cold, rainy and dark outside.

After getting hooked with the band, I bought all of their albums, except their 1996 masterpiece, Magenta Skycode.  Cool title isn’t it?  Unfortunately it is a very rare album (in fact mine is second hand) and it doesn’t come cheap, like many other out of print records.

Unlike many other albums, where you specifically like 2 or 3 tracks while the other are still good, but not that good, all Magenta Skycode tracks are excellent, and I cannot imagine how they could have been done in another better way.  With the melancholy of Useless, incredible keyboard loops and space like sound effects on Towards Distant, fast, up beat and head banging Snow Blind  and the sad sad Sweet Bloom of the Night, make this album a must have.

Magenta Skycode was released in 1996 and like all other great music albums, it is an album that never grew old and will always sound good, even after 13 years.  If you are looking for a copy of Magenta Skycode, look no further since Eibon Records released a remastered version of this album.  Eibon’s release includes also an additional CD (2 cd pack) which includes some rare tracks, studio-outtakes and other goodies we fans love.  Click here to check it out.

Earlier on this year, I asked Mauro Berchi from Eibon Records to send me an original, different from the rest album to listen to, something like I’ve never heard before.  To be honest, at this stage in life I thought it was impossible for me to be surprised by something in music. He suggested an album called “In Our Mad Bliss”, from Ignis Fatuus. Ignis Fatuus in Latin means fire foolish, or in better English, Foolish Fire.  Ask Mr Google and you’ll get to know that it is usually a term associated with a mysterious light associated with spirits, found in various folklore tales, or a more realistic explanation; “the ghostly lights sometimes seen at night or twilight over bogs, swamps, or marshes. It looks like a flickering lamp, and is sometimes said to recede if approached”.

Well, as soon as I received the CD and started listening to it, I immediately understood why this band carried such a name.  In Our Mad Bliss, Ignis Fatuus’s second album is mind blowing, magical, timeless, and suites every mood you might be in, and every season.  Irrelevant what genre of music you prefer, sit down sipping some fine Italian wine, and let this music play in the background.  Thanks to its wonderful melodies, you’re transported to a magical universe, where the fairies fly.  Their music is dark and gloomy, while at the same time it also gives you a warm and rich feeling thanks to the enchanting female vocals of Melysa Baucom and the large variety of instruments used.

No wonder Eibon Records are proud of being Ignis Fatuus’s record label.  This album meets everyone’s musical tastes!  I’m honestly looking forward to purchase Ignis Fatuus impressive debut album (as described from many) The Futility Goddess.

Well, after reading the above, you want to have a taste of Ignis Fatuus?  It’s just below, enjoy :)

Lately I decided that I should start listening to 60’s – 70’s rock bands, real rock bands who back then made history by being adventurous in their musical style and who wrote Rock Anthems.  Yesterday I was seeing a documentary about an English rock band called The Who.

I’ve heard about them before, but never knew that in the rock scene, they were as big as Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan etc.  From my first search on YouTube, I automatically got to know who is the original author of the song Behind Blue Eyes, which a couple of years ago was covered by Limp Bizkit.  The Who had many other rock anthems, not just this one.  Their vast musical repertoire varies from psychedelic rock, heavy rock and also soft rock.

Back in the 60’s they lived the high live, and are the pioneers of spectacle of instrument destruction during their live and energetic live performance.  The first time Pete Townshend (The Who guitarist) smashed his guitar in a London pub, is one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “50 moments that changed the history of Rock’n'Roll”.  As a matter of fact, nowadays a number of rock bands try to follow the Who by destroying their instruments during live performances.

What is most notable as well in The Who’s first albums is Keith Moon’s aggressive drumming style, quite impressive I must say.  Although Moon was a hyperactive problematic person in the band, Daltrey (The Who vocalist) said that Moon’s drumming style held the band together; that Entwistle and Townshend “were like knitting needles… and Keith was the ball of wool.”  Keith Moon had also a huge appetite for destruction, which turned into an obsession to detonate toilets everywhere he went, in hotels, friends’ houses etc.  Unfortunately, on the 6th of September 1978, Moon was found dead from his girl friend.  The cause of his death was an overdose of clomethiazole pills.

Well, while writing the above I’ve managed to listen to a number of tracks from The Who on YouTube, and can confirm that they are one of those 60’s – 70’s bands that changed Rock’n'Roll.  Another band in my wish list.

After the 4 years of silence, England’s electronic band are back with their 12th studio album, Sounds of the Universe.  Like everybody else, before listening to this album, my expectations were not really high, for a couple of reasons.
In the late 90’s, Depeche Mode didn’t really deliver what was expected.  They weren’t able to surprise us much like they used to do in the 80’s and early 90’s.  It is like they got stuck in the same waters of the monotonous 90’s commercial pop culture.  Though with the release of their 11th studio album, Playing the Angel, finally they delivered what was expected and much awaited from their fans.  So after such a great album, it is quite hard to expect a lot from them.  Few bands managed to release a back to back master piece.
Though with the release of Sounds of the Universe, Depeche Mode took another evolutionary step, far and far away from today’s radio played dance and commercial pop music, and surprised us again.  They dug deeper into their adolescence dark electronica.  Finally, it’s like they went back in time to some Gothic age, and found themselves again in the Black Celebration era.
Don’t let yourself be influenced by the non commercial success of this album; e.g. their first single “Wrong” only made it up to number 24 in the UK single charts.  Not making a commercial success means something.  As I said above, Depeche Mode ran away from the commercial music genre that today’s generic public likes, and got back to their roots.  Therefore in 2009, Depeche Mode released an album which can still be enjoyed from any hardcore Depeche Mode and electronica fan.

If you’re like me, always switching from one radio station to the other longing to hear some good music, I’m sure you’ve heard Leona’s latest single, Run. This single stormed straight to the top of the Official Singles Chart, like other singles she released previously. This single became available as a download only, from midnight on November 30, and in its first two days it sold 69,244 units (record). Leona stormed to success in just 2 years thanks to X-Factor and Simon Cowell (Mr DreamMaker).

Now don’t get me wrong, Leona got the right ingredients to be a great artist, impeccable voice, feel for music and a down to earth personality.  Even Simon Cowell, he is doing a good thing for music, trying to help people exploit their talents, most of which are not aware of.  But “Run” was originally written, composed and released by Snow Patrol, back in 2004. Isn’t it funny and a shame that Snow Patrol didn’t make such a success with the same song, which they wrote themselves? When Snow Patrol released it, they only made it up to number 5 in the UK charts.  Again, Leona’s voice is great, but it’s not just the voice that matters, there’s much more chemicals in a song’s formula to function!  Though marketing and money seem to be the right chemicals.

Well, unfortunately in today’s music industry, luck, marketing and financial power got more power to launch an artist than the actual music itself! If you form part of a band which has good music but can’t strike the right deal to take you off the ground, give Simon Cowell a call!
