The 1979 album The Wall, from Pink Floyd is most probably one of the most imaginative and intriguing rock album, or rock opera in the history of music.  Up till today, The Wall still gets a lot of attention from music journalists and fans alike.

The album is about a Pink Floyd, a boy who spent his childhood in post war England, and growing up to be a world-renowned rock star, which leads to a cathartic and destructive climax, where Pink couldn’t understand how a simple rock star are granted God like status from their fans.  Pink lives in isolation, whose father ‘Duty’, was killed during the war, and had no other option but to live with his over protective mother.  Thanks to a virtual wall Pink managed to built in his mind, he managed to distance himself from the rest of the world, a life filled with emotional and physical problems.  Every single incident in Pink’s life, meant another brick in the wall, which helped him distance more himself from the real world.

The album was mainly written by Roger Waters, Pink Floyd’s bassist, with valuable contribution from the other Pink Floyd members.  Roger Waters got his aspiration from his own childhood, whose indeed lost his father during the second world war, and stormed to success later on in his life.

You can read a much more detailed analysis of the whole album from the website The Wall Analyses, which is a must read complete documentation of the whole album.
