Have you ever spent some time alone, to cut off a little bit from the rushed up daily life? Life changed drastically in the last couple of decades and the more time passes, the less time we have to ourselves. Everyone is on the go. Smart phones and the internet made our life easier, yet tracable and reachable everywhere we are.

Once in a while, I like to spend an evening on my own, to ease the fast paced life I lead. I like to drive to some remote location where there is no light pollution, to spend the night gazing at the stars hanging from the sky, from my car’s sun roof. If you are richer than me, your experience of enjoying the starlit sky can be amplified with a cabrio. But you cannot enjoy and embrace the significance of such evenings without being accompanied by some “perfect fit” music.

The Skywatchers Handbook, the new album from the Sheffield / Colchester band Skywatchers is the ideal companion for such gazing evenings. Dive into a milky way of psycedhelic and alternative folk amalgamated with hypnotic like electronic effects. The combination of such great music and the comforting vocals performed by Kevin Pearce will take you to a tranquil and emotional journey. Their album single Serves me Right, is perhaps the most spacey like song from their ten track album. It is one of those type of songs which flashes at the back of your mindwhen you are in need of determination and courage.

So, how is the rest of the album? Imagine Radiohead style music, but definitely with more emphasis on the atmosphere, almost industrial like (sometimes) electronics. The album starts with a track called Dead Flowers for Her, which starts with simplistic classic guitar and bongo drums beat, which is slowly transduced into electric guitars and atari like beats. Soul Baptist, their second track is a great atmospheric song, which will echo in the labyrinths of your mind thanks to the daunting vocals. The next three songs, The Curious Village, Rythm of Ashes and The Lunar Tune will take you for an out of body experience, hovering through space with the other satellites, while looking back down on earth. Do you want to go to Space contains hallucinating happy choruses. The next track, Ever felt the Sky? is another great electronic driven great song, which is my second favorite thanks to those industrial beats. The album closes with Small Lights and Keep Watching the Sky, which are a good mixture of all the songs. Keep watching the Sky also features saxaphone and tribal like drums. It is a perfect song to close the album and could not have been in a better position.

Skywatchers will definitely impress a good number of music listeners out there thanks to their uniqueness and vast genre repertoire. As a matter of fact, if you ask me to file their album under a specific genre, I would file it under The unknown.

While searching for something new and original, I’ve ended up chatting with Mark Schenkel, who pointed me to an innovative band called X:THC. What is so special about this band, why are they innovative? They are working on a new concept of music, an album and film experience at the same time. Sounds weird, original or what? But let’s just wait and see, I surely have high hopes for this project. Since I’ve spoke to Mark, I’ve been checking my mailbox everyday, waiting for their new film / album to arrive, so I could check it out, listen to it. What’s for sure is that they are also evolving and redefining their live shows within the model of the music industry, to create an unforgettable live experience for the fans to enjoy.

From the little glimpse I’ve had of this album, the band combines downtempo broken beats, soulful chill, and indie rock songwriting to create a lush, electronic soundscape. The album X: The Human Condition, conjures also shades of post-punk and new wave, with a twisted and hypnotic sound. Well let’s wait and see till we listen to the whole thing, but again, I’m confident in this project. Well are you curious by now? Wanna have a taste yourself? Then sit down and relax, and enjoy the below video. Stay tuned with this blog for a proper review of this great concept album, and interviews with members of this original band.
